The benefits of olive oil against endometriosis
The director of the Illes Balears Health Research Institute, Sergio Camacho, and the president of the Protected Designation of Origin Oli de Mallorca, Joan Mayol, have signed a collaboration agreement whereby the producers will provide 400l of extra virgin olive oil free of charge to verify the benefits of this product in women with endometriosis.
The project, called ENDO-DIET, will be led by Dr. Pía Español, from the Endometriosis Clinic at Son Espases University Hospital . Thus, the regional Minister of Agriculture, Mae de Concha, stressed that research on food to improve health is vital and also allows us to show other uses of food.
ENDO-DIET aims to improve the quality of life of patients with endometriosis through dietary changes. Remember that endometriosis is a disease that affects approximately 10% of women of childbearing age. It is a chronic and recurrent disease that affects the female reproductive system.
In addition, it has significant clinical variability, which makes its diagnosis and treatment difficult. Therefore, research is essential to progress in understanding the mechanisms affected and to identify practices that can improve their evolution.
Extra virgin olive oil
In his view, modifying the diet through the introduction of foods rich in antioxidants, such as extra virgin olive oil, is an emerging area of research. . Some studies have already determined that it may decrease the markers of oxidation and inflammation linked to the disease.
The professionals of the endometriosis unit, in collaboration with the researchers, are developing the project “Dietary factors and endometriosis. Prospective study (ENDO-DIET)”. Its main objective is to evaluate the ability of antioxidant-rich diet to modify clinical parameters that can be reported by patients and biochemical markers that will be analyzed in blood and endometrial tissue.< /p>
The Protected Designation of Origin Aceite de Mallorca is committed to contributing to knowledge of the effects that the consumption of extra olive oil virgin can have on this disease. Thus, it will provide 40 lots of extra virgin olive oil so that patients can incorporate it into their diet.
The collaboration between the DOP Aceite de Mallorca and the IdISBa will allow obtaining quality scientific evidence that will probably have clinical implications in the improvement of symptoms< /strong> of patients with endometriosis.
