The director of the Illes Balears Health Research Institute, Sergio Camacho, and the president of the Protected Designation of Origin Oli de Mallorca, Joan Mayol, have signed a collaboration agreement in which the producers will provide 400 liters of extra virgin olive oil free of charge to test the benefits of this product in women with endometriosis.
The project, called ENDO-DIET, is led by Dr. Pía Español of the Endometriosis Clinic at the Son Espases University Hospital. For example, the regional Minister of Agriculture, Mae de Concha, emphasized that research into food is crucial for improving health and also allows us to identify other uses for food.
ENDO-DIET aims to improve the quality of life of patients with endometriosis through dietary changes. Remember that endometriosis is a disease that affects approximately 10% of women of childbearing age. It is a chronic and recurrent disease that affects the female reproductive system.

The specialists at the Endometriosis Unit, in collaboration with researchers, are developing the project “Dietary Factors and Endometriosis. Prospective Study (ENDO-DIET).” Its main objective is to evaluate the ability of an antioxidant-rich diet to modify clinical parameters reported by patients and biochemical markers analyzed in blood and endometrial tissue.
The Protected Designation of Origin Aceite de Mallorca is committed to contributing to knowledge about the effects that the consumption of extra virgin olive oil can have on this disease. This will provide 40 batches of extra virgin olive oil for patients to incorporate into their diets.
The collaboration between DOP Aceite de Mallorca and IdISBa will make it possible to obtain high-quality scientific evidence that will likely have clinical implications for improving the symptoms of patients with endometriosis.
Currently, science has not established a treatment that would completely combat endometriosis. In the meantime, women with this condition must either undergo surgery to remove the lesions or undergo treatment that blocks the production of female hormones: a form of premenopause.
