Historical Record in Production, Exports, and Consumption

The global olive oil sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, having reached a historical record in world olive oil production, exceeding 3.5 million tonnes. This milestone, accompanied by an extraordinary recovery in consumption and a historical record in exports, solidifies olive oil as a global product, despite commercial difficulties such as tariffs.

This optimistic outlook was the central theme of the 122nd plenary session of the International Olive Council (IOC), held in Córdoba (Spain) to mark World Olive Day. International demand is growing, and the large production has been traded at prices in the order of magnitude of the average of the last six years, a factor that demonstrates consumer loyalty. Those who discover olive oils, particularly extra virgin, are very loyal consumers.

Global Expansion and Growth Factors

The increase in consumption has occurred not only in the traditional Mediterranean region but primarily in non-traditional regions, such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Australia, or China. This expansion has accelerated since the pandemic, driven by a greater concern for health, healthy living, and sustainability—factors that accompany olive cultivation.

Spain is consolidating its position as the sector’s leading power, concentrating 39% of world olive oil production and 67% of European production. Current global production is around 3.5 million tonnes, with the goal of reaching 4 million tonnes worldwide this decade. Spanish oil is present in more than 150 international markets. Furthermore, the European Union–Mercosur agreement is a great opportunity to expand the presence of olive oil in a market of 268 million people.

Cultivation Data and Main Producers

Currently, 67 countries dedicate 11.7 million hectares to olive cultivation. Spain is the world leader both in olive grove surface area with 2.7 million hectares, and in average annual production with 1.5 million tonnes. It is followed by countries such as Tunisia (1.8 million ha) and Italy (1.1 million ha).

Regarding production, other key countries are Italy, Tunisia, Greece, and Turkey, with volumes ranging between 220,000 and 400,000 tonnes. Portugal stands out for its high productivity and quality, reaching productions close to 220,000 tonnes, with 98% of its output classified as virgin extra or virgin.

The product reaches more than 190 countries. In the list of largest consumers, Italy tops the ranking, followed unusually this year 2024 by the United States, with Spain in third place. In exports, Spain leads, followed by Italy and Portugal.

The olive tree has demonstrated its adaptability with crops in places as unique as the island of Saint Helena (Australia), the volcanic slopes of the Hawaiian island of Maui, or the Japanese island of Shodoshima, underscoring its true global dimension.
