Packaging is Important for Preserving EVOO

The packaging of olive oil has gained significant importance in recent years. Previously, the market was almost exclusively dominated by plastic bottles and jugs, limiting the options available to consumers. Nowadays, a significant step has been taken towards the improved preservation of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) with the introduction of more sophisticated packaging. Cans and dark glass bottles not only offer superior aesthetics, but they also play the crucial role of protecting the oil from light and heat, factors that can deteriorate its quality and flavor. This evolution in packaging ensures that every drop of EVOO retains its properties and benefits, providing a first-class culinary experience.

The Best Container for Olive Oil

It depends on several factors, such as the quality of the oil, the durability of the container, and its convenience for use.

  1. Dark Glass Bottles: Dark glass bottles, like green or brown, are popular for packaging high-quality olive oil. They protect the oil from ultraviolet light, which can cause oxidation and deterioration. Additionally, glass is impermeable to gases and does not chemically react with the oil, helping to maintain its freshness and flavor.
  2. Metal Cans (Tinplate or Aluminum): Metal cans are another common option for packaging olive oil. They provide protection against light and are durable, making them ideal for transport and long-term storage. However, it’s important to choose internally-coated cans to avoid the metal interacting with the oil, which could alter its flavor.
  3. Plastic PET Bottles: Plastic PET bottles are lightweight, cost-effective, and resistant to breakage, making them convenient for transport and storage. However, transparent plastic doesn’t offer the same protection against light as dark glass, so it’s important to store them in a cool, dark place to preserve the oil’s quality.
  4. Bag-in-Box: This type of packaging consists of a flexible plastic bag inside a cardboard box. It is convenient for dispensing the oil and can prolong its shelf life by protecting it from air and light. However, it might not be the most aesthetic option for presenting oil at the table.

In general, choose a container that protects the oil from light, air, and heat, and that is convenient for use and storage. Always check the quality and authenticity of the oil and pay attention to the manufacturer’s storage recommendations to ensure you maintain its freshness and flavor for longer.
