Olive Oil from Jaén

The oil from Jaén is predominantly of the Picual variety, accounting for 95% of the province’s production. This variety is characterized by its strong flavor and personality, with pronounced spicy and bitter notes. It is also very resistant to high temperatures, making it suitable for frying.

This variety has varied fruity aromas (mainly apple and tomato), and due to its strong flavor, it pairs well with gazpachos and salmorejos, robust salads with ingredients like arugula or feta cheese, red meats, stews, and grilled fish.

The oil from Jaén is famous on a global level, with 3 Protected Designations of Origin: Sierra Mágina, Sierra de Segura, and Sierra de Cazorla. These are mostly high-mountain olive groves, with poor soils and extreme climatic conditions, which paradoxically produce high-quality olives, as it forces the olive tree to “protect itself”.

Oil from Jaén has been produced since the times of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, and today the region is the world’s largest producer of olive oil, contributing 20-25% of the world’s production (and 40% of national production). This is why Jaén is also known as the “Sea of Olives“.

Mills of Jaén

Currently, Jaén has 402 mills, and the province has significantly boosted Oleotourism in recent years with the “Jaén Oil Routes”:
visits to mills, museums, oil tastings, and gastronomic samplings.

In fact, the Spanish Association of Olive Municipalities (AEMO) awarded the Best Mill in Spain 2022 to Castillo de Canena, located in Baeza.

Which is the best oil from Jaén?

At Aceite del Campo we want to highlight some mills whose oils have received significant international awards:

  • Castillo de Canena: Early harvest Picual, medium-high fruity aroma of green olive with mature notes of fresh fruit.
  • Bravoleum: EVOO from Jaén, in its Picual, Arbequina, Frantoio, and Nevadillo varieties.
  • Oro Bailén: Unique and peculiar fruity and aromatic notes, with harmony between fruity, bitter, and spicy.

Buy Jaén oil online

Most of the EVOOs we present at Aceite del Campo are not easily found in street commerce. Unfortunately, supermarkets continue to mistreat our Liquid Gold by only selling cheap and mediocre quality brands.

In any case, if you decide to buy EVOO online, remember that oils should provide detailed information about their origin, variety, and harvest date.
